Turtle-Fever

Last weekend I traveled to the east coast of Malaysia, to Cherating beach, because I was so keen on seeing some turtles. Next door to the Club Med there is a turtle station/turtle sanctuary located I visited. They provide a lot of information there, they keep some big turtles, a kind of “breeding garden”, which means they collect the eggs from the beach and burry them again at a certain part of their area so that they are protected. And of course they do have baby turtles- Gosh, they are so cute!!!!

This station is based on donation and as I donated, they invited me to release some of the baby turtles… what an experience! Imagine such a small fragile turtle on your hand…

and they know exactly where to run to! You let them down on the sand and you will see them creeping, nearly running over the beach towards the sea. Their arms and feet seem to be quite strong also they are so tiny… Then the next wave will take them away… Aren’t they brave, running into the big big ocean, facing all the danger…?

Happy Malling

15 days to go before the big race! Beyond, I actually found another very amusing way of doing some workout to prepare for the run – SHOPPING!! The malls in Malaysia are so incredibly huge, that it’s really a sporty challenge or maybe even a real sport to do shopping in there! Running around, putting all these clothes on and off, carrying all these bags, balancing them while wiggling through narrow rows or having a closer look to a new issue.

I call my newfound activity, “Malling". To me it’s the perfect way to express doing excessive shopping in a mall. It seems to be something like a hobby to a lot of Malaysians, right? I only managed to see One Utama, The Curve, Time Square, Mid Valley, Tropicana City and Amcorp Mall yet. The last two ones are rather small and could be compared to our shopping centers in Germany. I wonder which of the other malls is the biggest over here… But I can tell you, that I haven’t been through them all yet. They are just too big, this might be even more than a whole-day-event and after this I might feel more exhausted than intensive training on tracks!

After four hours my feet already hurt so much, I guess I had a lot of blisters there, covering nearly my whole feet… May I suggest a shuttle service within the mall, like a golf buggy… But it seems as if locals are really used to this. It might also explain why most of the people over here are so well in shape :-)

Oh, and besides, I even found a some new sport shirts… Most of them are from Reebok and for me it was amazing to discover, that they apparently have different design compared to the German market (please feel free to proof me wrong as this is just an assumption!) and seems to be (maybe because of that) very famous over here. I got a black one, a rose one and a mint one and they have all in common this soft nice-haptic material I like so much.

During the last registration for the Siemens Run in CP Tower I had the chance to see the running vest I am gonna receive for the run- the material is different, but also very nice, seems to be able to soak a lot of sweat and keep the skin comfortably dry! The cutting is classical and simply, very nice, just white colour but with the print of the Reebok and the Siemens logo on the front side and a small-seized “What are you running for?” logo at the back side. As it’s the same brand as the shirts I bought I am really looking forward to collect it!

I Change

I can’t believe how lazy I became over here!! At home I use to cycle a lot, but over here it would probably kill me! I just can’t tell whether the heat and humidity would murder me, but in any case of doubt it would be the traffic… I really miss my bike!

Besides that I use to work out in a fitness center, but since I arrived over here I haven’t done anything! First I was so happy when I leant that my condo also has sports facilities. But then I had to discover that the size of this gym there is roughly the same as my bedroom, providing only one crosstrainer, two treadmills and kind of tower offering some possibilities for muscle workout. I got so fed up with trying to workout there… Every time I try, I found it was already occupied. And besides: no air con, no fan and a smell of sweat- all in whole a real welcome-party for mosquitos! Quite ridiculous!!

This reminds me again of the I CHANGE. There was this Speaker’s Corner about two weeks ago with Dr. Muruga. In this short time he tried to make us aware that it’s up to ourselves to do the change and not to wait for the others or the circumstances/situation to change.
He is so right- my gym would not become bigger and better just because I grumble the whole time! So you can guess that I really welcomed the super special offer for Siemens employees to get a cheaper membership at the gym next door! And finally, I had my first entry there!!!

But I can tell it was so bitter to recognize that I’ve already lost so much shape! My arms became so flabby, if I wave my hands goodbye you might feel a pancake jiggles at my arm. And 10 Minutes running on the treadmill nearly seemed to kill me! This way I could promenade with snails but not participate in a marathon!!! There is still some time left for the warm-up…

Similar to the sightseeing over here, I really have to force on that as well. Maybe I should combine both, visiting points of interests while running- I was recommended to try the two hundred and something stairs that lead to the temple in Batu Caves… I like this idea, but not for this Saturday! The coming Saturday I will join the first Siemens running clinic at Lake Gardens! Malaysia’s national coach will train the participants for the marathon. As I learnt that Reebok is coming to this place, too, I could check if I would need different shoes for running.

My Cup of Tea

I was sipping my usual cup of tea today and thought of this Siemens Run form I got from an employee meeting recently. When I first landed in Malaysia a few weeks back, I thought being a German in Siemens would not be quite a different experience – it is after all a very German company I thought. But I have to say a Siemens event in Malaysia does tantalize one’s palette in its own local flavor.

Speaking of, If I may say, Malaysians are really quite indulgent, especially when it comes to food! For me it was rather strange to have noodles and rice for breakfast (in Germany we would have this for lunch or for dinner). Further, the dishes over here are spicy, quite spicy, very spicy, even spicier or deadly spicy! I really wonder if I would get used to this during the following months? I really fell in love with these roti-things and I also discovered this green cake; I learnt that it’s a special Malay plant people also use to make green drinks. This flavor was something delicious that even made me thinking of bringing one of these plants back home. Seems that a big part of life in this country is about food and quite important for people… I also noticed that a bulk of people can swarm the buffet table all at one time. I’m not sure if this is normal but in Germany, overtaking a buffet line can mean that you are looking for trouble!

In opposite to most of my fellow countrymen, the Malaysian people seem very helpful and yet a little invasive, in quite a warm and friendly way. I was quite astonished of this girl who went up to me and asked me from which country I’m from, what’s it like in Germany, who I like in Malaysia… she had a lot of questions for me and my background, I started to feel like a criminal. But I always remind myself that this is part of the Malaysian hospitality, to show interest in the foreigner’s life. Being a stranger among strangers is another experience for me. Of course people can tell I am a stranger because of my European looking. For me they are strangers vice versa, so I really feel lost sometimes. But I like the variety over here, so many different cultures! I am quite excited every day to have a new little or big thing to discover! I would like to know how to wrap a sari on for example and I already learned what halal means…

The buildings here are so cold, I nearly freezed the whole time because of the air conditioning. I felt like sitting in the fridge! And outside you just melt away because of the heat! Sometimes I am so scared about something in my back, but the following second I have to discover that it’s just a drop of sweat running down my back! These extremes are so hard for me to get used to!

And information on Siemens Run kept repeating itself throughout the event, like a blinking billboard really. Being the self proclaimed dreamer like me, I started to play a picture of myself, gearing up for a 10KM run. And there was also me in the park practicing for a marathon with the wind in my face, sweat on my skin, just me and the path, birds chirping above my head – telling me it is rather too early in the morning to get out of bed! Weeks it has been since I got the Siemens Run form. And as obsurd as the idea may seem of me running at 8 on a lazy Sunday morning, the form is still sitting on the table, staring at me in a rather optimistic yellow color. This is something I would probably not give a second thought to do in Germany, it’s undoubtedly not my cup of tea! Yet doing new, obsurd things than usual seems to be so much easier in another country far away from all the things I'm used to. If you want to do something, you have to do it right. So perhaps for now, I’ll just leave the form on the table for awhile longer, while I continue to sip my tea.

Only a short time after I started my internship over here we had an employee event at the Sime Darby Convention Center. It was a very interesting event with a lot of information on the company and I enjoyed to get to know a lot of colleagues and to discover a variety of foreign food. But the thing that captured me most on this day was the information on the Siemens Run which will take part on the 19th of July. I don't know what exactly happened to me, it was a very crazy idea that crept in (to) my mind... The picture of me running in this heat I'm not used to yet was unimaginable. But ... why not? I brought my sports shoes with me and I guess they really get bored in my wardrobe! And the picture in my head kept running... Me What a stupid idea, I tried running several years ago and I never found a way in there, it was just not my cup of tea! But I could smell a slight taste of challenge that attracted me... and the idea to do something I probably never would do at home in Germany!
